There are still games without red flash and with nominal HP, but without any other health indicators that I would say I have cared about my health in. The cognitive register of a characters health can be primarily subconscious from the UI and elements like that allow you to immediately tell what your health is at without any reinforcement which gives a slight upside to nominal HP. This is why Doom had the doom guy on the UI in various levels of bloody face. And it's not a game that has natural health regen so sometime you have to deal with the filter until a wave of enemies shows up.

Red flash damage indication can be alright and I dont necessarily think thats what this post is talking about. A red flash would be fine but this is a red filter over your screen at low health until you get your health back. Couldnt you show exterior damage on the model conveying the same thing but it takes a lot more work and looks a million times better? Yes, it takes more work but it makes it a better game and removes any downsides of red siding. Thoughts?Ĭontrol is a game where you can see your character though cause it is 3rd person. This especially applies to single player games where your health is constantly displayed on your UI. You don't have to ruin someone's whole situation just to quickly alert them that their health is low. It does not need to stay there, especially once a combat encounter ends. I think just having a flash of red or a quick blur on the screen to alert you that you have low health is enough. That just makes the challenge less fun and I'm more likely to just let my character die and start all over again. If the game is tough enough to where I am consistently low on health, I don't need to have my screen obscured. I just think it's a cheap mechanic to add difficulty. The entire screen goes red when your health is low and guess what color some of the toughest rooms / enemies are? RED! So your attempt is basically over once your health gets low because you can't tell wtf is happening right in front of you. Control was the worst offender I played recently. r/CoOpGaming - A community for co-op gaming r/xboxone - Xbox-specific subreddit for general Xbox news and discussion r/playstation, /r/PS4 & /r/PS5 - PlayStation-specific subreddits for general PlayStation news and discussion
